Mama Warned Me: When Influence Corrupts Good Manners
I wrote in a devotional anthology with some of my veteran sisters; at the time of writing, it is 2025. Sharing with you is critical, especially as we move deeper into end times, which are saturated with wickedness.
If you haven’t already, take a moment to read last month’s post, Are You Rooted in Christ? it sets a powerful foundation for what I’m sharing today.
A Mother’s Warning Was Biblical All Along
It dawned on me one day that many of the proverbs our parents reminded us to do—or not do—are biblical. I’m not sure if my mom knew she was instilling biblical principles. For instance, she would warn me to be careful who I hung out with. Honestly, I thought that was a little judgmental.
I didn’t realize the warning she was giving me was biblical.
📖 1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV)
“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
The company we keep—what we listen to, participate in, and watch—has a strong impact on our spiritual growth, soul, and body. We must connect with relationships and environments that guide us on a path of holiness, wisdom, knowledge, and increased faith.
A simple meaning of this verse: the Apostle Paul was warning believers against being misled. Hearing false teaching often enough can lead to self-deception. “Evil communications” refers to companionship and association—false teachings, corrupt influences, and bad company. “Corrupt good manners” speaks to habits, morals, character, and lifestyle.
Paul warned them then—just like our parents warned us.
Three Key Points
1️⃣ Powerful Environments
I left home and joined the military in my twenties—honestly for adventure and travel—and I received it. But I didn’t surround myself with authentic believers who encouraged standing firm in Christ. I conformed to a culture that contradicted my faith.
I attended parties and events that didn’t increase my faith, listened to ungodly music, watched ungodly movies, and other things I won’t mention. I have since repented—I’m good.
What I learned:
-
Maintain your godly identity and character wherever you are
-
Never compromise good manners for corrupt communication
-
Be aware of who and what you listen to—influence matters
During my military service, there was no social media, yet influence was still powerful. Nothing influences you more than your own choices.
Read the Word daily. Pray daily. Pray for others daily. Maintain your core values. When we operate in good manners, we should be the influencers.
I now intentionally fellowship with true believers and accountability partners.
My husband is my number one accountability partner. I strive to model my life after Jesus, the ultimate leader.
2️⃣ The Influence of Media and Entertainment
Our character is shaped by what we consume—music, movies, games, influencers, and environments.
Is what you’re feeding your Spirit, Soul, and Body uplifting—or corrupting?
Pay attention not only to what you watch and listen to, but who is producing it. Repetition leads to belief—especially for children and grandchildren.
Guard your mind, heart, and body.
Sometimes we must let go of people, places, and things to preserve godly character—whether in the military, school, organizations, or friendships.
Ask yourself:
-
What lyrics am I listening to?
-
What shows am I watching?
-
What influencers am I following?
-
What are they teaching me—directly or indirectly?
Influence matters.
There are many teaching false doctrine—even in churches. You are responsible for what you allow into your life.
3️⃣ The Choice Is Yours
In the military, I couldn’t choose my environment—but I could have chosen my choices.
Warnings were given. Ignoring them was a choice.
Some compromise had already begun before entering the military, but that environment tested the waters unapologetically. Still, I’m grateful—it pushed me closer to God and revealed my character.
Some things that seem fun can cause you to lose your peace.
When I later revisited 1 Corinthians 15:33, it became crystal clear how easily corrupt communication disrupts good manners.
Reflect:
-
What is influencing your life?
-
Is it drawing you closer to Christ—or away?
-
Is your environment increasing your faith?
Final Thoughts
My mama warned me:
“Girl, be careful who you hang out with!”
That was—and still is—a biblical warning.
Our walk with Christ is shaped by:
-
Our environments
-
Our relationships
-
The media we consume
-
What we are taught
We must connect with relationships that lead us toward holiness, wisdom, and faith.
Reflection Challenge
During your daily devotion:
-
